The Tor Project has issued an emergency update for Windows users on March 27, 2025, releasing Tor Browser 14.0.8 with critical security patches.

This Windows-only release addresses “very urgent” security vulnerabilities in Firefox, the browser framework underpinning Tor Browser, and users are strongly advised to update immediately to maintain their privacy and security while browsing anonymously.

Tor Browser 14.0.8 specifically targets high-severity security issues present in Firefox ESR 128.8.1, which serves as the foundation for the current Tor Browser series.

The emergency nature of this release underscores the seriousness of the vulnerabilities being patched, although specific exploit details remain undisclosed as is common practice for security updates.

“This version includes very urgent security updates to Firefox for Windows. We advise Windows users to update immediately,” states the official announcement from The Tor Project’s blog.

The urgency in the language suggests these vulnerabilities could potentially compromise user anonymity or system security if left unpatched.

Technical Changes and Improvements

The changelog reveals multiple technical modifications beyond the critical security fixes.

Bug tor-browser#43592 specifically backports essential security fixes from Firefox 128.8.1esr, while tor-browser#43553 implements a new User Survey UX for the desktop version.

On the build system side, several improvements have been implemented, including:

Removal of support for migrate_archs and migrate_langs in update_responses (Bug tor-browser-build#41375)

Addition of clairehurst to the list of accepted firefox/geckoview signers (Bug tor-browser-build#41383)

Updates to OpenSSL hash file formats (Bug tor-browser-build#41384)
Upgrading snowflake to version 2.11.0 and lyrebird to 0.6.0 (Bug tor-browser-build#41399)

Implementation of separate update_responses commits for each platform (Bug tor-browser-build#41378)

Update for Legacy Windows Systems

Concurrently, The Tor Project has also released Tor Browser 13.5.14 for users still running Windows 7, 8, and 8.1.

This parallel release contains the same critical security fixes for these legacy systems, which continue to receive support until at least March 2025.

The release statement notes that this version is part of the legacy channel and aims to extend support for Windows 7/8/8.1. If your operating system is not one of these, you should download the most recent stable from the 14.0 series.

The updated browser is available for both 64-bit (105.0 MB) and 32-bit (106.0 MB) Windows systems through the official Tor Project website and distribution directories.

The installation package can be run directly from a USB flash drive, making it portable and convenient for users who need anonymous browsing on multiple systems.

The Tor Project actively solicits community feedback on this emergency release. “If you find a bug or have a suggestion for how we could improve this release, please let us know,” the announcement states.

This collaborative approach helps maintain the robustness of this privacy-focused browser, which is critical for journalists, activists, and privacy-conscious users worldwide.

Given the urgent nature of this security update, all Windows users of the Tor Browser should prioritize updating to version 14.0.8 without delay to maintain their online security and anonymity protections.
