Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, has suspended deposits and withdrawals while investigating a suspected security breach involving billions of dollars in digital assets.

Reports suggest that around $5.7 billion may have left wallets linked to the exchange, although Binance has not confirmed the total stolen or established that every flagged transfer belongs to the attack. If verified, the incident could become the largest cryptocurrency theft on record.

In an official statement on X, Binance promised to cover all losses and said its teams were conducting security checks, freezing funds, and working with law enforcement. “User funds are safe,” the exchange said, adding that it would publish a full post-mortem once the investigation ends. The statement did not identify the entry point, name an attacker, or provide a reopening date.

We are working non-stop to resolve this issue. Binance will cover all losses.

As a precaution, all deposits and withdrawals are temporarily suspended while our team conducts security checks, freezes funds, and works with law enforcement.

Suspicious Transfers Span Multiple Blockchains

Early reports linked the suspected Binance hack to large transfers across Ethereum, Bitcoin, and TRON. Reported outflows included approximately $1.45 billion in Bitcoin and $875 million in Ether, alongside stablecoins and other tokens.

However, estimates changed as investigators examined additional wallets. Axios reported that analysts and traders placed the suspected theft between $1.7 billion and $5.7 billion, showing how uncertain the initial figures remain.

That distinction matters because a wallet transfer does not, by itself, prove theft. Investigators still need to separate attacker-controlled movements from exchange activity and establish which receiving addresses belong to the same operation.

Some wider estimates include Bitcoin and TRON outflows that had not yet been tied to the attacker. Treating the full reported outflow as a confirmed loss would therefore overstate the available evidence.

Stablecoin issuers moved quickly to restrict funds connected to the suspected incident. According to Reuters, Tether froze nearly $1.57 billion, while Circle froze more than $800 million.

Together, those actions blocked approximately $2.38 billion in stablecoins. Binance co-founder Yi He also said Ripple had frozen roughly $200 million. These figures describe frozen assets, not the total amount stolen or money already returned.

Binance separately reported verified frozen assets of $2.54 billion, with tracing still underway. Freezing limits further movement, but it does not automatically restore funds to the exchange. Recovery remains a separate process. The response highlights why rapid communication between exchanges, token issuers, and investigators can reduce the damage after suspicious transfers are detected.

Binance has not disclosed whether the suspected breach involved stolen signing keys, a compromised employee account, malicious software, or a weakness in its wallet systems. No public technical findings currently establish an attack path or identify a threat actor. Assigning blame before that evidence emerges would be premature.

Previous exchange breaches show why the missing technical details matter. Cybersecurity News’ analysis of the Bybit attack described how attackers compromised a wallet provider’s environment and changed transaction data during a legitimate transfer. That case provides context, but it does not establish a connection to Binance or prove that the same method was used here.

Binance’s promise to cover all losses is significant, but its final cost remains unknown. Reporting places its Secure Asset Fund for Users, known as SAFU, at roughly $1 billion in Bitcoin. A substantially larger confirmed shortfall could require resources beyond that emergency reserve. No detailed compensation plan has been published.

The investigation also faces a familiar recovery challenge. Cybersecurity News’ report on tracing stolen Bybit funds explains how investigators combined private communications with blockchain records to identify laundering activity. For Binance, the next essential disclosures are a verified loss figure, affected wallet details, the root cause, and a safe reopening timeline. Until then, users should follow the exchange’s official updates rather than treat circulating estimates as settled facts.
